College Admissions Counselor Q&A | Celt Admissions Blog

UST Houston Admissions Counselor Marcos Canales

Editor’s Note: Marcos Canales is a freshman admissions counselor in the University of St. Thomas Office of Admissions. With more than 10 years in higher education, Marcos offers college admissions assistance to students, making the transition from high school to the University go as smooth as possible. He’s a great resource for students who have questions about admission requirements, campus life and other aspects of the UST community.

What is your typical day like as a University of St. Thomas admissions counselor?

A typical day as an admissions counselor can vary depending on the time of year, but usually I’m out on the road visiting schools, evaluating applications, and meeting with students who come to visit campus.

Why did you become a college admissions advisor for UST?

I was born and raised in Midland, Texas, and decided to move to San Antonio for college. I attended the University of Texas-San Antonio where I gained an appreciation and love for higher education after getting involved as an Orientation Leader. My time at UTSA changed my life. It opened up a whole new side of college that I didn’t know existed, and has taken me from Texas to Oregon and back again. Thanks to my undergraduate experience, I’ve dedicated my life towards working with college students in a variety of ways that have varied from residence life to admissions.

What are some ways you can help students in the college admissions process?

Applying to college can be an overwhelming process, so I’m here to be a resource to make it go as smoothly as possible. I often suggest to students that they make sure they are aware of the admission processes and requirements for every school they’re interested in. Students should also feel they can ask questions about what needs to be done. Ultimately, the best way I can offer college admissions help to students is to give them as much information about UST so they decide if it’s the best school for them.

What is your favorite part about being an admissions counselor?

I really enjoy meeting with prospective students, whether it be at a college fair during lunch or at one of our campus events. I truly believe in higher education, and I’m honored to help students make their transitions from high school to college.

What kind of student do you look for to be a good fit for St. Thomas?

What I like about UST is the fact that it is very diverse and welcoming, so I think that almost any student could be a good fit here. That said, those who see the value in a strong liberal arts education but also want to be a part of a unique and growing community would do well at St. Thomas.

What is your favorite St. Thomas event/activity?

Freshman orientation at the University of St. Thomas is one the most exciting and rewarding times of the year for me because of the energy that can be felt on campus and because I have the chance to see the students who I worked with become a part of UST.
