In Memoriam

Mary Bernadine Lahey Miller

Mary Bernadine Lahey Miller passed away on Dec. 13, 2018. She was a devout Catholic and generous supporter of the University of St. Thomas. She was a member of the Siena women’s organization at UST, a longtime active organization named for St. Catherine of Siena, who was known for her extreme humility and charity. Many members of Siena have generously contributed to UST through their estate plans. Scholarships are still awarded today because of their visionary contributions and generosity. The organization established a scholarship endowment.

Miller was a former president of Siena and participated for almost 50 years until the group disbanded. She lived within a mile of the University and remained involved until her death.

Tom H. BassTom H. Bass

Professor Emeritus Tom H. Bass passed away on March 3, 2019. Bass, a third-generation Houstonian, was a longtime member of the Department of Political Science at University of St. Thomas.

He was also a state legislator and a Harris County Commissioner, and he spearheaded the creation of the Houston metro area’s 911 system. The Greater Harris County 911 Emergency Network Building bears Bass’ name. He is the only professor in Houston to have a park named after him. Tom Bass Park is located at Highway 288 and Beltway 8.

“Bass was attracted to politics because of his interest in public service and public good,” UST Professor of Political Science Jon Taylor said.  “He made a real contribution. This person got into politics in the early ‘60s inspired by John Kennedy. In fact, he was inspired not just Kennedy’s politics but because Kennedy was a Catholic as well.”

Randa Kerr Davis

Randa Kerr Davis passed away on April 8, 2019. She was the granddaughter of T.P. Lee, the second owner of UST’s Link-Lee Mansion. Randa grew up in Link-Lee and was the owner of Jiggs, the dog who is rumored to be buried somewhere on the University campus.
