\"Student<\/a>As high school has come to a close, it\u2019s time to start thinking about what\u2019s next. That may be college for you, but college is not like high school.\u00a0 Here are some tips you can start using now, so you can get a jumpstart and be prepared when you arrive on campus.<\/p>\n

Do Your Research
\n<\/u><\/strong>Regardless of which major you choose, you will be expected to know how to do research to find answers to big questions. Instead of waiting to develop your research skills, start honing them now by figuring out which college is right for you. Ask yourself what you want your experience to be like, and find a school that meets your criteria. It\u2019s also important to have an idea of what you want to do after college, so start exploring career options by volunteering.<\/p>\n

Skills, Skills, Skills
\n<\/u><\/strong>Conducting research is just one of the skills you will need in college. You will quickly learn that managing your time, figuring out your learning style and utilizing study skills are even more important than learning what\u2019s in books. Rather than figuring out how to do these things on the fly, start while in high school by keeping a planner and using online aptitude and personality tests to learn more about you. Also, get in the habit of regularly checking your email\/voicemail and following up in a timely manner. \u201cNobody told me\u201d will not fly anymore.<\/p>\n

Your First Steps Toward Adulthood
\n<\/u><\/strong>For many, going to college will be the first time they\u2019re expected to do things for themselves, such as taking care of their health, finances and chores, while balancing academics and social lives. If you haven\u2019t picked up on how to balance your savings account or wash your clothes, start learning now so you won\u2019t have to keep asking your parents for money or to do your laundry.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a big world out there
\n<\/u><\/strong>Going to college will give you the chance to learn more about the world, so don\u2019t wait to open your eyes to what\u2019s out there. Being able embrace diversity and new ideas is a big part of the college experience, so it wouldn\u2019t be a bad idea to start stepping outside of your comfort zone now by engaging in community service or learning about a culture other than your own.<\/p>\n

College can be some of the best years of your life, but they can also be some of the most stressful ones if you\u2019re not prepared.\u00a0 So it\u2019s a good idea to be proactive and start thinking like a college student now so your transition can be smoother.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
