What Is an MSB Degree? A Closer Look at This Education Option

In today’s workforce, having a solid understanding of business concepts can make a big difference — especially when it comes to job hunting. You can apply fundamental skills like budgeting, forecasting and reporting to almost any position. But what if you didn’t get a chance to take these sorts of business classes during undergrad because you majored in something else, like psychology or engineering?

If you’re looking to expand your business skills and move your career forward, a Master of Science in Business (MSB) might be the perfect program. Keep reading for a detailed overview of the degree and insight from Dr. Mario Enzler, dean of the Cameron School of Business at the University of St. Thomas – Houston (UST).

MSB degree vs. MBA

When people think of a graduate degree in business, an MBA is often what first comes to mind. So what’s the difference between an MSB and a Master of Business Administration (MBA)?

An MSB degree is a one-year graduate program that caters to those who do not hold a degree in business. It’s designed specifically for individuals looking to increase their business acumen but lack the knowledge one might have developed as an undergrad student. MSB students learn foundational business principles that, when combined with prior school and work experience, make a well-rounded professional.

Generally speaking, an MBA degree can be completed in one year if studying full-time or two years if studying part-time. While you don’t need a business degree to pursue an MBA, it is often expected that you will already be well-versed in accounting, finance, economics and statistics.

Both MBA and MSB students are motivated by the prospect of career advancement, higher salaries and more leadership opportunities.

MSB degree admission requirements

While stipulations vary depending on the institution, admission requirements for MSB students at UST are as follows:

  • Complete and submit an online application at stthom.edu/gradapp
  • Proof of a bachelor’s degree
  • Official transcript(s) from all previous institutions you’ve attended
  • Your latest resume, including professional references

Note that UST does not require students to complete the GMAT exam.

A look at MSB degree curriculum

Throughout UST’s one-year program, MSB students are immersed in a comprehensive business curriculum grounded in Catholic ethics and morals. In addition to classroom theory, field trips and guest speakers, students spent significant time analyzing case studies to prepare them for the real world of work.

MSB students can expect to take classes like:

  • Accounting, Reporting and Control
  • Business Law and the Spirit of the Enterprise
  • Leadership of Principled Prosperity
  • Selling Methodologies for Business Development
  • Financial Planning
  • Fundamentals of Information and Supply Chain Management
  • Strategic Marketing in the Digital Age
  • Organizational Behavior
  • Human Resources

MSB students at UST must also complete a capstone project where they put everything they learned into action.

“UST maintains strong relationships with many local companies and organizations that allow our students to come in and work with them,” Dr. Enzler explains. “They bring us real problems, and our students have to assess the situation and come up with creative solutions, under the guidance of the professor.”

Skills learned in an MSB program

The MSB degree was created to meet the demand for a graduate business degree that caters to non-business students. The program starts with business principles and strategies before moving on to tactics and execution.

Master of Science in Business degree students can expect to develop skills in:

  • Sales
  • Budgeting
  • Marketing
  • Human resources management
  • Leadership
  • Team building
  • Reporting
  • Forecasting
  • Strategic decision making

“Many of our students come into the MSB program with a degree in liberal arts. They did a lot of reading and writing during undergrad and are really hard workers,” Dr. Enzler shares. “These kinds of students fly through the program; they aren’t intimidated at all.”

Common MSB jobs

Adding an MSB to your resume has the potential to boost your career opportunities. “Employers really value the character formation of a liberal arts degree in combination with business knowledge,” Dr. Enzler points out.

MSB graduates often find jobs in fields like:

  • Business development
  • Market analysis
  • Project management
  • Strategy consulting
  • Personal finance
  • Fundraising
  • Non-profit management

Jumpstart your business career with an MSB degree

It’s clear that the MSB program is a unique opportunity for liberal arts majors to develop highly marketable skills. If you want to hone your business instincts and create more career opportunities for yourself, this degree may be the perfect fit.
